My love for medicinal mushrooms

reishi

Last year when I was in LA, I was wandering the streets of Venice and stumbled upon a place called ‘Moon Juice’. I remember I went in and looked at the smoothies. My dream of finding the perfect smoothie has had come true. The flavour was just so amazing. I can’t remember exactly what I ordered but of course I looked up their menu when I got home.  I found out all the ingredients and had to make sure to order them so I could remake this smoothie at home. Luckily I already had most of it in my pantries.

My love for wellness started when I was around 20 years. Thanks to the wellness movement on Instagram, I have learned so much. If you know me you know that I love anything related to wellness, healing and taking care of the body. When I looked up the ingredients I found out that there was actual mushroom in my drink. Now I wasn’t unfamiliar with mushrooms, of course, but I had never tried reishi mushroom before.

Magical medicinal mushroom: reishi.

I often eat shiitake and oyster mushrooms for their taste and health benefits. But since a couple months I have added medicinal mushrooms to my diet. When I started researching the healing benefits of medicinal mushrooms, I was sold. I had to get my hands on this funny little magic mushroom. And no, I am not talking about shrooms, I am talking about reishi.

The reishi mushroom, also known as Ganoderma lucidum has been around for thousands of years, mainly popular in Asian societies for their beneficial properties. Reishi is especially known for boosting the immune system and anti cancer properties. After a couple of  months of taking reishi in a safe dosage I can assure you that it has helped me with feeling more energised. I definitely feel this immune boost since I have been taking reishi in my lattes and smoothies.

Where to get it and how to take reishi?

Since there are different types of reishi mushrooms it is important to look at the dosage. Often times you only need a little bit because reishi is so strong. Reishi comes in powder and in pill form and you can probably get reishi at your local health store. Especially since medicinal mushrooms are becoming quite popular again. I personally prefer reishi in powder form because it’s easier to add to smoothies and latte’s. I don’t consume reishi every day, I look at the recommended dosage and that does the trick.

Reishi latte recipe:

Blend 250 ml of almond milk with Himalayan pink salt, raw cacao powder and your dosage of reishi powder. You can sweeten it with agave syrup or coconut nectar. After everything is well blended add the substance to a pan and heat it up until warm enough to drink. Add cinnamon and agave syrup for flavour. Enjoy!
